Enhancing Adult Literacy Through Community Collaboration

This five-hour workshop, presented in conjunction with the Missouri State Library, will help library staff understand adult learning styles, learn how libraries can maximize adult literacy resources and services through community collaboration, identify potential literacy partners, learn how to create an adult learning environment within the library, and to identify resources to help adults address basic life needs. Limited spots are available for literacy program staff and tutors who wish to attend.

All workshops are free, but registration is required.

The goal of this training is to provide participants with information regarding:

  • Why libraries are ideal environments for adult education and literacy
  • Adult learning principles
  • How libraries can maximize adult literacy resources and services
  • The importance of community collaboration and formal partnerships
  • Assessing community adult literacy needs (conducting a Community Needs Assessment)
  • Setting up adult learning spaces/environments in libraries
  • Serving ESL and diverse adults and families
  • Technology and online support
  • Tutor support
  • Offering resources to help adults address basic life needs
  • Health literacy
  • Financial literacy
  • Linkage and referral to community agencies
  • National and statewide literacy resources and research-based best practices.

This training is targeted for public library personnel from rural and urban libraries; however, limited spots are available for literacy program staff and tutors who wish to attend.
