Integrating Health Literacy Into Your Classroom
April 24, 2009
9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Kansas City, MO
This training has been approved for 5 hours of professional development credit.
This workshop is designed to advance adult educators' understanding of the impact of improved health literacy for adults, their families, and the community. Using evidenced-based education guides and responding to new research, this workshop will provide understanding and practical, hands-on techniques to increase health literacy skills. Based on work with Rima Rudd, Harvard University, and the work done at the Center for Health Care Strategies, Inc. (CHCS) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, the training will focus on areas known to be of particular difficulty to low-literate adults. These areas include asthma, cholesterol, blood pressure, smoking, weight loss, and exercise. The workshop will also teach how to choose a good managed health care plan and how to utilize the services they offer. The workshop will:
- Introduce practitioners to evidenced-based best practices to increase health literacy skills to impact adults, families, and communities;
- Model strategies that will integrate health literacy into an existing adult education classroom;
- Engage educators in an understanding of how health behavior is changed and how to develop cross-cultural understanding of health issues;
- Provide access to free instructional materials, fully developed health literacy curricula, resources, and web sites.
