This training has been approved for 4 hours of professional development credit.
This intense and focused training will provide participants with additional research and best practice information on teaching adults English, allowing participants to improve practices and accountability in their local programs. The course is designed to support instructors and volunteers who are new or have limited experience serving adult English language learners and their families. The workshop will:
- Present information about English language instruction and describe strategies used with English language learners
- Present basic format for an English language lesson that meets the needs of the learners and matches these needs with appropriate instructional strategies that accommodate cultural differences.
- Discuss some of the myths surrounding how people learn English
- Analyze the differences between Adult ESL Reading Instruction and ABE Reading Instruction in both research and practice.
- Explore teaching resources including: websites, teaching exercises, community partners, and using realia/everyday items.
- Present current research around English language instruction and successful teaching practices.
- Provide opportunities for current teachers to share their experiences in the classroom.

This is a free workshop. Materials and lunch will be provided. Any cancellations must be made at least 48 hours prior to the workshop or a fee of $100 to cover materials will be assessed.
